Prevention > USDA Pyramid

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (UDSA) has developed a new food pyramid called MyPyramid. It symbolizes a personalized approach to healthy eating and physical activity. To understand the new symbol, it is important to learn what each part means. The USDA has broken this into 6 components described below:

  1. ACTIVITY is represented by the steps and the person climbing them. This reinforces the importance of physical activity.
  2. PROPORTIONALITY is shown by the different widths of the food groups. These are not to scale. They serve only as guides as to how much you should consume from each food group. The color coded groups are as follows:
    GRAINS VEGTABLES FRUITS OILS MILK MEAT & BEANS
  3. MODERATION is symbolized by the narrowing of each food group from top to bottom. The wider base signifies foods with little or no fats or added sugars. These should be selected more often.
  4. VARIETY is shown by the six color codes representing the 5 food groups and 1 oil group. This demonstrates that you need a balanced diet from all groups represented in the pyramid.
  5. PERSONALIZATION is shown by the one person climbing the steps. The pyramid is not one size fits all. There are actually 12 different pyramids, and depending upon your age and activity level, there is a pyramid that will fit you best. To personalize your pyramid, please visit www.MyPyramid.gov.
  6. GRADUAL IMPROVEMENT is symbolized by the steps and the person taking a step. The key is to take small steps to improve your diet and lifestyle each and every day.
