Community Memorial Hospital Debuts New Public Art Program
Ventura, California, 12/19/2008
The ground floor of Community Memorial Hospital has been transformed into an art gallery, with its walls adorning the works of more than 60 local artists. The exhibit, "Variations on a Local Theme," runs through March 1, 2009.
The exhibit is a joint partnership between Community Memorial Hospital, Buenaventura Art Association, the Ventura Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Ventura and the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation. All the work is for sale and benefits the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation, as well as Buenaventura Art Association and the artists.
"This project has been a great opportunity to bring together local artists, and showcase their talents in a healing environment. It has also had a very positive impact on our patients and families, as well as staff and physicians," states Haady Lashkari, Assistant Vice President at Community Memorial Health System.
"We have paintings, pastels, prints, and photos," states Joan Phelps of Leadership Ventura, who helped organize the exhibit with Haady Lashkari, Jim Duran, Director of Cypress Place Assisted Living, and Stephanie Seymour-Fuller. "What ties the exhibit together is that all works have a local theme."
Elena Brokaw, Community Services Director with the City of Ventura, is working with the group to incorporate the exhibit as part of the city's Public Arts Program.
An artist reception was held on Dec. 2 in CMH's first-floor lobby, more than 100 art enthusiasts and community leaders attending. Among those attending were Gary Wilde, CMHS President and CEO, and Mike Ellingson, CMHS Vice President of Marketing and Development, along with Denise Sindelar, Public Arts Supervisor for the City of Ventura, former Ventura City Councilmen Greg Carson and Ray DiGuilio and Zoe Taylor, Ventura Chamber of Commerce President/CEO.
