Community Memorial Hospital & Ojai Valley Community Hospital Name New Chiefs of Staff

Community Memorial Health System has announced that Dr. Samuel D. Small has been elected Chief of Staff at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura for 2009, and Dr. John Slaght has been elected as Chief of Staff at Ojai Valley Community Hospital for a two-year term covering 2009 and 2010.

Both physicians will serve on the Board of Trustees as their hospital’s medical staff representative.

Dr. Small, who practices Orthopaedic spine surgery, has been on staff at CMH since 1980. He is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Board of Spine Surgery, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association and the Ventura County Medical Association. He was a clinical instructor at the UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1996 to 2006.

Dr. Small practices medicine at the Ventura Orthopaedic Group in Ventura. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1974 and earned his medical degree in Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University in Chicago in 1978. Dr. Small interned in general surgery and did his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Bi-County Hospital, Michigan State University. He completed his spine fellowship at the UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Slaght has been an anesthesiologist at Ojai Valley Community Hospital since 2000. He is board-certified in the states of California, Florida and Massachusetts and is a member of the American Board of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Association. Previously, he served as an anesthesiologist at Santa Paula Hospital, the Boston Regional Medical Center, University Hospital in Boston, and Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon, Fla.

Dr. Slaght received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Pharmacology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1983, his Master’s in Biological Sciences from the University of Houston in 1986 and his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He interned in internal medicine at Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland, Ore., and did his residency in anesthesiology at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Slaght completed his fellowship in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School’s Children’s Hospital in Boston.
