Gold Dust Gala benefits women with breast and cervical cancer

Ventura, California, 03/17/2009

In 2008, an estimated 182,460 new cases of breast cancer were reported in the United States. Another 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. For nearly two decades, dedicated volunteer members of Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation have partnered with Community Memorial Health System to take care of women in our community who lack access to life-saving tests and treatments to combat these diseases.

Each year, through an event known as the Gold Dust Gala, immeasurable hours and funds are donated to ensure the success of and continuation of this program. Proceeds from the Gold Dust Gala are used for breast cancer detection and treatment, cervical cancer screening and vaccination, and needed diagnostic equipment to benefit women in our community who lack access to life-saving methods. In 2008, over 80 women who qualified for this program were cared for at The Breast Center at Community Memorial Hospital.

This year’s 19th annual Gold Dust Gala features Country and Western singing star and song-writer Keith Anderson, on Saturday, April 18, at Ventura’s Seaside Park. The Gold Dust Gala begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails, a silent auction and western line dancing. A barbecue dinner and dancing will follow at 6:45 p.m., with Keith Anderson taking the stage at 8:30 p.m. The silent auction will feature dinners at fine restaurants, theater tickets, gems, western clothes, boots and autographed items from top country artists.

While many healthcare facilities across the nation are reducing or eliminating programs, Community Memorial Health System continues to enhance and expand much-needed services locally. “Our unique program has experienced such phenomenal success that the Gold Dust Gala Committee, in partnership with the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation, has decided to expand our efforts to include cervical cancer screenings and treatment programs, a bilingual community-wide outreach program and the purchase of critical diagnostic equipment,” said Gold Dust Gala Chair Margie Stites.

Tickets and sponsorship packages for the Gold Dust Gala can be purchased online at, or by calling the Foundation office at 805/667-2881.
