Community Memorial Hospital Lauds Volunteers

Ventura, California, 04/19/2009

Community Memorial Hospital and nearly all of its Auxiliary members honored close to 40 men and women who have donated thousands of hours of service to hospital patients and their families.

Volunteers whose donated time last year reached levels ranging from 100 to 7,000 hours over the course of their years of service for CMH were celebrated at the annual Auxiliary Meeting and Awards Luncheon hosted recently by CMHS and held at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ventura. This year’s theme was “Hearts and Flowers.”

Special honors went to Judy MacGregor for 45 years of volunteer service; Pat Donswyk for 40 years of service; and Pearl Armstrong, Lois Moynihan, Marlene Sturgell and Joan Wink for 20 years of service.

Dorothy Stockman was recognized for giving 7,000 hours over her years of service; Katie Weldon for giving 6,000 hours; Shelby Bauer, Ray Cavallero and Marjo Gardner for each giving 5,000 hours; Trudy Cook and Diane Cunningham for each giving 3,000 hours; Betty Jane Hughes and Catherine Keating for each giving 2,000 hours; and Jean Brady, Arline E. Brown, Joy Howells, Edie Marshall, Dorothy Reed and Frederick Soprano for each giving 1,000 hours.

In addition, 18 other volunteers were recognized for giving at least 100 hours.

The Auxiliary also thanked Dr. James Woodburn for his work assisting the program as well as Helen Bagley, who manages Community Memorial Hospital’s gift shop.

The Auxiliary members at CMH, including teens in the Junior Volunteers Program, perform a variety of tasks such as discharging patients; stocking supplies; delivering books, flowers, mail and medications; staffing the front desk; assisting in the Pharmacy, Emergency Department, Recovery and Same Day Surgery; and cuddling premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Auxiliary members also raise money from souvenir birth certificate sales, fundraisers and gift shop sales. The Auxiliary presented President and CEO Gary Wilde with a check for $145,000 from earnings last year. In addition, outgoing Auxiliary President Trudy Cook noted, “In the year 2008, the CMH 395-member Auxiliary also provided donated service valued at over $688,596.”

Newly-elected CMHS Board of Trustees Chairman Martin A. Pops, M.D., and new Community Memorial Hospital Chief of Staff Samuel D. Small, D.O, attended the event, in addition to past Auxiliary presidents.

Anyone interested in joining the CMH Auxiliary is asked to call 652-5043, or pick up an application form at the reception desk at CMH, located at 147 N. Brent St. in Ventura.
