Meister Foundation awards $5,000 scholarships to two nursing students

Ventura California, 10/19/2010

Charlene Dickson and Joceline Lam, students in Ventura College’s Associate Degree Nursing Program, are recipients of the 2010 Meister Family Foundation Nursing Scholarship, offered through Community Memorial Health System.

The scholarship winners each receive $5,000. They were chosen by a four-member CMHS nursing committee based on criteria that included grade-point average, community service, financial needs, a 500-word personal statement focusing on career goals and a letter of reference from a VC nursing faculty member. Upon graduation, these nurses may be offered Nursing jobs at CMHS.

Dickson, who serves as a certified nursing assistant in Community Memorial Hospital’s fifth-floor Medical-Surgical Unit while attending school, said she chose a Nursing career, due in large part to the support and care she received from nurses when she was a patient.

“CMH is very important to me,” Dickson wrote in her personal statement. “I had my children there, and my cancer surgeries there. I was supported in my recovery by my favorite people, nurses.”

Lam, who works in CMH’s operating room, said she grew up wanting to be a medical doctor, but decided to switch to nursing after earning her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of California at Riverside.

“I knew I wanted to not only help people, but I also wanted to reach out to patients on a more personal level,” Lam wrote in her personal statement. “Nursing became the clear answer that fulfilled all of my career criteria.”

Barbara Meister, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Barber Automotive Group in Ventura, has served on the board of the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation since its inception in 1984. A longtime Ventura County philanthropist, she established the yearly $10,000 nursing scholarship in 2007 to show her gratitude for the caring treatment her late husband Larry received during his stays at the hospital.

Community Memorial Health System is a not-for-profit health system, which is comprised of Community Memorial Hospital, Ojai Valley Community Hospital, and nine family-practice health centers entitled Centers for Family Health.  The health system is located in Ventura County, California.
