Slaght, Small named new hospital chiefs
Slaght, at OVCH, and Small, at CMH, have strong Ojai ties

Community Memorial Health System has announced that Dr. Samuel D. Small has been elected chief of staff at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura for 2009, and Dr. John Slaght has been elected as chief of staff at Ojai Valley Community Hospital for a two-year term covering 2009 and 2010.
Both physicians will serve on the board of trustees as their hospital’s medical staff representative.
Dr. Small has been a member of the CMH Medical Staff for 25 years. He is a spinal surgeon certified by the American Board of Spine Surgery as well as the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. A member of several professional organizations including the North American Spine Society, American Medical Association, California Medical Association, Ventura County Medical Association and the American Osteopathic Association, he was a clinical instructor at the UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1996 to 2006.
Small attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and received his bachelor of science degree with honors in 1974, his medical degree in osteopathic medicine from Midwestern University in Chicago in 1978, and completed his internship and Orthopaedic residency at Bi- County Hospital in Warren, Mich., a part of the Henry Ford Hospital System and affiliated with the Michigan State University Orthopaedic Training Program. He completed a fellowship in spine surgery at UCLA in Westwood and in 1996 became a partner in the Ventura Orthopaedic Medical Group, the first Orthopaedic group in Ventura County, established in 1935.
Small practices spine surgery exclusively with an emphasis on cutting-edge “motion sparing” techniques such as artificial disc replacement as well as minimally invasive microsurgery.
Dr. Slaght has been an anesthesiologist at Ojai Valley Community Hospital since 2000. He is board certified in the states of California, Florida, and Massachusetts, and is a member of the American Board of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Association. Previously, he served as an anesthesiologist at Santa Paula Hospital, the Boston Regional Medical Center, University Hospital in Boston, and Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon, Fla.
Slaght received his bachelor of arts degree in pharmacology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1983, his master’s in biological sciences from the University of Houston in 1986, and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He interned in internal medicine at Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland, Ore., and did his residency in anesthesiology at Boston University Medical Center. Slaght completed his fellowship in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School’s Children’s Hospital in Boston.
