CMHS Celebrates Employee Service Milestones

Community Memorial Health System had the honor of celebrating the service milestones of 351 members of our talented team at this year’s annual Employee Recognition Dinner.  Employees who reached five, ten, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 year benchmarks were recognized for their outstanding commitments to the organization.

The event brought together staff representing a number of departments and locations within the health system; from Surgical Services and Human Resources to Information Systems and Environmental Services.  Each and every member of our team plays a vital role in the exceptional care we provide to the communities we serve, and we look forward to celebrating their dedication every year.

Awardees and their guests enjoyed dinner, dancing, and a program held at the Ventura Beach Marriott on Friday June 30th.  The program included a special video presentation featuring awardees in the 35 and 40 year categories.  This year, CMHS honored 13 individuals with 30 years of service, 9 with 35 years of service, and five with 40 years of service.

Welcome to the NEW Community Memorial Hospital 6th Floor

As we round the final turn and enter the homestretch of construction on the new Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, more technology is being installed, more cosmetic work is underway, and more areas of the incredible new facility are nearing completion.  The excitement amongst our physicians, staff, donors, and community members is growing, and today, we are proud to invite you in for a sneak peek of our new 6th floor!

Our 5th and 6th floors are identical patient floors, full of natural healing light and breathtaking views of Ventura’s treasured hillsides and expansive beaches.  The exposed diagonal piping houses seismic structural components and was intentionally left uncovered to allow the organic light to pour in.  Combined, the 5th and 6th floors have 120 large and entirely private rooms, complete with their own bathrooms and showers.  These expanded rooms will enhance privacy and comfort, facilitate more peaceful recovery, and allow for more intimate visits with physicians, nurses, family, and friends.

Both floors are made up of an east wing and a west wing – mirror images of each other separated by three visitor-only elevators.  Located in the middle of each wing are large central nurses stations, specifically designed to be accessible to guests while also meeting the dynamic needs of our staff and physicians.  Eco-friendly finishes such as recycled glass counter tops and flooring made of organic materials are also found throughout the 5th and 6th floors.

We know you want to see more, so we created a video fly-through of the 6th floor east wing.  If you’d like to see it in person, please join us on an upcoming construction tour.  Reserve your spot by contacting Tinette Hood ( or Lindsey Dunn (

Precious Cargo

The great philosopher Confucius once said, “Study the past if you would define the future.”  CMHS has taken this sentiment to heart throughout the fundraising, design, and construction of the new Community Memorial Hospital; celebrating, honoring, and learning from our history with every step we take forward.

Our past and our future came together in symbolic fashion with the recent relocation of the treasured Millard O. Sheets mural from its long-time home in the Mathilde Huntsinger Garden to its new place of prominence at the entrance to the new hospital.

The Sheets mural, “A Child’s Discovery of Nature,” was dedicated on September 9, 1974, and originally placed at the Brent St. entrance to the hospital.  An expansion in 1996 required that it be moved to the Huntsinger Garden where it has been enjoyed by patients, families, physicians, and staff for over 20 years.

Moving this precious cargo was an incredible feat, accomplished over the course of several days by a team of logistics professionals.  On the momentous day that the mural was raised out of the garden and moved over the existing hospital by crane, onlookers witnessed a pivotal moment in the history of our hospital.

We captured this extraordinary event on video and are proud to share it with our community.  Click here to watch.

Stryker Critical Care Technology Arrives at CMH

In preparation for the opening of the new Ventura hospital, CMH recently received delivery of 28 Stryker InTouch Critical Care patient beds into the existing CMH Intensive Care Unit.

Featuring innovative design for enhanced maneuverability, our new Stryker InTouch beds will contribute to greater efficiency and safety of patient transportation throughout the hospital while helping to improve patient comfort.  The beds’ on-board, touch-screen computers provide an extra level of critical patient monitoring by remotely alerting staff to any changes in preset bed positions, and Stryker’s unique early mobility friendly design includes a 16-inch low bed height and supportive side rails to help our teams facilitate early mobility exercises.

The Stryker InTouch beds are one of the first new technologies to be used by our staff before the opening of the new hospital.  The significance and excitement of delivery day was captured on video as our teams prepped and installed the beds for use.

Long-Time CMHS Nurses Receive Rayman Scholarships

Scholarship season continues at Community Memorial Health System with the announcement of the first inaugural Holly Rayman Nursing Scholarship recipients, Maria “Lupe” Vaca and Fiona Shaffer.  Both women are veteran members of the CMHS team who have demonstrated a true passion for nursing, a commitment to the health system, and are taking their educations to the next level.

Maria “Lupe” Vaca has worked as an RN on the 6th floor for 17 years and is passionate about Oncology nursing.  In 2014, she received a certificate of recognition from the Community Memorial Hospital Physicians for her support of the Sound Hospital Team, and in 2015 she was an American Cancer Society Oncology Nurse Honoree.  Lupe is pursuing her BSN through the University of Phoenix.

Fiona Shaffer paid many childhood visits to Community Memorial Hospital to see her grandmother who was a ward clerk on the 5th and 6th floors.  As a child, Fiona thought her grandmother was a nurse and wanted to be just like her.  For the last 16 years she’s done just that; spending her first six years as an RN on CMH’s 4th floor and the last ten years as a key member of the Labor and Delivery team.  Fiona is currently enrolled at Grand Canyon University where she is working to complete her Baccalaureate degree.

(L to R) Emilie and Myron Rayman presented Lupe Vaca and Fiona Shaffer with their scholarships.  Cynthia Fahey and Gary Wilde also attended the presentation.  Please join us in congratulating Lupe and Fiona and thanking them for their dedication to CMHS!
